Brabham helps IRWIN to best race of year
23 October 2010
IRWIN Racing enjoyed its best day of the 2010 V8 Supercar season after finishing today's first leg of the ArmorAll Gold Coast 600 in an impressive fifth place.
David Brabham started the race and drove superbly, as one of the fastest of the international drivers.
Avoiding the first lap accident which retired several cars, Brabham steadily made his way through the field, handing the driving duties over to Alex Davison while sitting on the cusp of the top ten.
Davison then drove what many believe to be his best race of the season to date. It was a mature, measured drive in a car that continued to grow in strength and competitiveness as the race went on.
IRWIN Racing showed how good the car was with both Davison and Brabham pulling off several impressive over taking manoeuvres throughout the race, including a pass on TeamVodafone's Jamie Whincup in the dying stages of the race.
“All of a sudden there was mayhem ahead of me [at turn four of the opening lap]," Brabham commented, "It was lucky I went around because I had plenty of time to stop, put the IRWIN Ford in reverse and get the hell out of there.
"I lost a lot of places, but, once I got going, the car's pace was good, it was getting stronger as the race went on and it was looking after the tyres.
"I had some great dices, I was really pleased. Then Alex did a fantastic job, his pace continued to get better and he felt right at home up the front which was great. I'm really pleased for the SBR team to get on the podium with the #9 car and fifth for us, that's a really good result.
"It was a good strong performance by the team; it gives us a lot of confidence going into tomorrow. I didn't feel comfortable in the practice sessions, I had to dig deep today, clear my head and just get on with the job. I knew, once the race settled in, that I'm always pretty strong in race situations. I got into a good rhythm and really enjoyed myself out there. We can improve the IRWIN Ford even more, but today's result gives everyone a big lift which helps us massively going into tomorrow.”
While IRWIN Racing laps up the excitement of a top five result, its focus now turns to tomorrow's second race of the weekend. With confidence sky high, it believes that today's result is no fluke and that it can repeat today's success.
“IRWIN Racing went from the outhouse to the penthouse in the race today," engineer David Stuart smiled, "We only made a really small adjustment from qualifying to the race and, as is the IRWIN Racing story this year, we qualified badly, but raced really well.
"Today we were really fortunate to work with two very good drivers, and both of them did an excellent job. David set the day up for us, he missed all the carnage on the opening laps and he was super quick. He gave Alex the car in very good condition and Alex did a fantastic job to pass cars.
"We weren't just making up spots in pit-stops either - we passed cars. The SBR pit crew did an amazing job as we double stopped, like every other team, and picked up spots under a safety car. The guys did a fantastic job. Really, as [#9 team driver] John MacIntyre said on the podium, this result is for the team, IRWIN Racing and SBR. Everybody did their job and that's all we can ask, it's a great feeling.”
