Crash denies IRWIN Racing on Gold Coast

From fifth place in race one, David Brabham and IRWIN Racing tasted the lows of motorsport after an accident ended their participation in the ArmorAll 600.
IRWIN Racing started the final day of the ArmorAll Gold Coast 600 on a high following yesterday's fifth place in the first leg but, less than 24 hours later, the team's dream of a second great result was in tatters.

Qualifying 17th for the weekend's second and final 300-kilometre race, Brabham made up five spots on the first lap only to find himself in the wall and out of the race less than two laps later.

On only the third lap, Brabham was leading HRT's Cameron McConville, but an error as the pair came out of the beach chicane saw McConville fail to give Brabham any room as the cars veered to the left of the track in preparation for the next corner, with the subsequent impact forcing the international guest star into the wall and out of the race.

“I got a very good start, and got up to twelfth by passing Cameron McConville around the outside of turn four on the start," Brabham explained, "Everything seemed fine, and the IRWIN Ford felt really good, so I was really looking forward to this race. Everything seemed right - you just got a good feeling about it.

"Going through the fast chicane, the rear stepped out and I lost some momentum coming out. Cam obviously got a bit of a run on me but, as you come out of that chicane, the car naturally goes over to the left and he put his nose there. The next thing is I'm in the wall.

"It's an extremely disappointing end to what was a great day yesterday. I think that today was looking very promising until that happened.”

IRWIN Racing now turns its attention to the repair of the car for Brabham's co-driver Alex Davison in readiness for the Falken Tasmania Challenge over 12-14 November.
