With gearbox parts for RPM's GT3 class Porsche 997 proving hard to come by, Phiroze Bilimoria is to switch to the Emotional Engineering Vauxhall Monaro for the latest round of the Avon Tyres British GT Championship.
Bilimoria was due to compete alongside Nigel Redwood in the 997 at Rockingham before the car developed a gearbox issue during Friday testing, which led to the pair switching to an older 996 model for the race weekend.
Although the team worked to find replacement parts to get the new car out onto the grid at the famous Brands GP circuit, the latest round of the Porsche Carrera Cup next weekend at Knockhill has meant there are no gearboxes or spare parts available – leaving the team unable to compete with the car in the penultimate meeting for the GT3 class of the GT championship.
However, with Matt Griffin now not competing in the Monaro in the British GT series again this season – ironically to drive for RPM – Bilimoria was given the chance to partner Steve Hyde in the Australian machine.
“We have had a very fluid situation with the team over the past few races,” Emotional team boss Allen Orchard said. “When we heard Phiroze was available and after his stunning performance last weekend, we were delighted to have him on board.”
Bilimoria admitted he was disappointed that the 997 wouldn't be ready in time for the weekend, but said he was thankful to Orchard for giving him the chance to take his place on the grid.
“Unfortunately we could not get a replacement gearbox for the 997 GT3 car this weekend, but the call from Allen was a welcome solution,” he said. “I've known Allen for a while and I am really looking forward to working with him and getting in the car. This is a great opportunity to run in the top class of the Championship.”
