Lister storms to victory at Castle Combe

23 June 2002

Reigning BRDC British GT champions, David Warnock and Mike Jordan took a commanding victory in round seven of the British GT Championship at Castle Combe this afternoon, Sunday.

In a dramatic race that had a lengthy safety car period early on, the 60-minute thriller began with the TVR Cerbera Speed 12 of Rob Barff leading, but he was forced out with engine problems.

Brazilian Thomas Erdos took over the lead of the race in his Saleen S7-R but Jordan powered past and into first place as Erdos handed over to team-mate Ian McKellar Jnr.

''I had to drive hard as I didn't want Ian to close the gap on me. It was a great race for us though and it has helped us narrow the gap in the championship,'' said Jordan.

The Saleen of Erdos/McKellar took second place, the pair having driven a consistent, flat-out pace throughout the race, but the restrictor the car now runs, coupled with 100 kilos of success ballast meant that the car never quite had the chance to get on terms with the Lister.

The GTO class battle went the way of Tim Sugden. The Porsche 911 GT3-R driver beat previous round winners Simon Pullan and Martin Short in their TVR Tuscan R after an incredibly close battle over the second half of the race.

Piers Johnson and John Hartshorne scored their first podium finish in another TVR Tuscan R to take third in class after the Jones brothers' Porsche was slowed by two punctures.

The TVR fended off a late-race charge from an inspired Steve Hyde in the Morgan Aero 8, back from Le Mans, that he shared with Richard Stanton.
