PICS: Why Dean Ellison isn't at Brands...

Pictures by Ken Richardson

While James Ellison took his first BSB podium in race two at Oulton Park, brother Dean experienced very different fortunes - being left unconscious after smashing into a stationary motorcycle, ruling him out of this weekend's Brands Hatch round.

The Co-ordit team rider, who had retired with tyre problems in race one, hit Steve Mercer's fallen machine - leaving Dean with 'an all round beating' but thankfully no major injuries.

"I started to get through the field and I could see some points, then as I exited Foulstons Chicane I hit a stationary bike that was lying in the middle of the track and was thrown into the air and rendered unconscious," said Ellison.

"After being examined by Toby Branfoot and his medical team I had only sustained a broken bone in my foot, ligament damage to the ankle, concussion and an all round beating.

"I'm desperate to get fit as fast as possible as I want to pick up where I left off at Thruxton. Unfortunately the crash will put me out of action for Brands Hatch but I'm aiming to be fit for Donington Park on the 26th May," he added.

The whole incident - which, combined with a separate accident for Cal Crutchlow, brought out the red flags - was missed by the TV cameras, but eagle-eyed Crash.net viewer Ken Richardson was in the right place at the right time - then sent in his shots for the world to see.

Mercer was thrown from his bike, the narrowly missed by a couple of riders behind him, then Ellison came out the chicane and before he had chance to brake properly, he was hitting the fallen bike. Then it took the chumps marshalling too long to get to him lying motionless down they track. They were too busy tending to the bikes for some reason. There were a lot of people fearing the worst after such a huge crash, but thankfully Dean's ok (relatively.)

Not all the marshalls were appalling at the scene though, as some were clearing the track of debris and warning the other riders to keep to the left and slow down (Stuart Easton was riding like a pr**k under red flag conditions.)
