Airwaves Yamaha has confirmed that it will enter both Leon Camier and James Ellison in the
Donington Park round of the 2009 World Superbike Championship, as reported by
Crash.net last month.
Camier and Ellison currently sit first and second in the ViSK British Superbike Championship after a stunning start to the season that has seen the R1 riders win seven of the eight races.
For their wild-card assault on World Superbike, the team will be aiming to take advantage of data gathered from a double victory at the Derbyshire circuit back in May.
“Ever since the team told me we were going to be wild-cards at
Donington Park, I have been counting down the days!” said Camier, presently 38 points ahead of Ellison in the
BSB title chase. “It is going to be really interesting to see how we perform against the World Superbike teams.
“We know the competition will be tough, but we'll be working flat out to see a British team on the podium at our home round. Hopefully the fans will be there to support us! It'll be a tough few weeks going straight from
Snetterton to
Donington Park and then to Knockhill, but I can't wait,” he added.
Having scored his first British Superbike victory at
Donington Park in May, Ellison is eager to return to one of his favourite racing circuits.
“I've always loved racing at
Donington Park,” he confirmed. “Scoring my first ever
BSB victory there a couple of weeks ago makes the place even more special. It's a real honour to be competing in the British round of the World Superbike Championship for Airwaves Yamaha. I want to thank them for giving me this incredible opportunity. I know how proud the team is of their winning trophies from 2000, so it would be a dream come true to win a few more.”
GSE Racing, the team behind Airwaves Yamaha, has a history of success on the World Superbike stage and in 2000 took victory as wild-card entries at both
Donington Park and
Brands Hatch with Neil Hodgson.
Team manager Colin Wright told
Crash.net that the team's
Donington Park
BSB data will also be made available to the factory Yamaha
WSBK team, which has won seven races so far this season with Ben Spies.
Spies is presently 53 points behind Ducati's Noriyuki Haga heading into the next round at Misano on June 21.
The
Donington round of the World Superbike Championship will take place from June 26-28.
