Laverty returns to Oulton for Splitlath debut
7 March 2012
Splitlath Redmond 2012 line-up of John Laverty and Florian Marino got their first taste of Aprilia machinery at Oulton Park on Tuesday.
The pair rode stock RSV4s at the Cheshire circuit, the scene of Laverty's season-ending accident in 2011.
Laverty suffered a myriad of injuries - including two broken ankles, a fractured right knee and a fractured pelvis - after a practice fall on the start-finish straight. Laverty returned to the location before getting out on track for Splitlath (pictured).
BSB rookie Marino - runner-up in the 2010 FIM Superstock 600 series and eighth for Ten Kate Honda in last year's World Supersport Championship - used the test to get his first experience of 1000cc machinery.
“They've both had a brilliant day,” said team co-owner John Dimbylow. “Florian was like the typical 'I have no fear' teenager, on it straight away the moment he was let out. He was good to watch and you could see his times were getting better and better as he tried to wring as much as he could out of the bike.
“John was obviously going to be more cautious as this was his first time on a bike since the crash, and what a place to do it - the same track where he had the accident. But he's just amazing. He went out, got a bit of a feel for it and then slowly stepped it up and by the end he was absolutely flying. It's been a great day.”
The Splitlath Redmond squad will test at Brands Hatch on Wednesday.
