Rutter 'so happy' with podium in 'horrible' conditions
10 April 2012
He frowns upon his tag as primarily a wet weather specialist, but Michael Rutter put all his experience to good use as he claimed the final spot on the rostrum at Brands Hatch for the MSS Bathams Kawasaki team.
Although anything but a one-trick pony, Rutter does have a knack for riding fast in the rain and he delighted team boss Nick Morgan with a superb display of skill and control to take third behind race winner Jon Kirkham and Alastair Seeley in testing conditions on the Indy course on Easter Monday.
Rutter, who qualified in eighth place on the ZX-10R, said the absence of traction control under the new BSB regulations made life even tougher on the damp track at Brands.
“It was horrible out there in the race, especially without traction control. One wrong move on the throttle and the bike would spin up and come around on you,” he said.
“I'm so happy to get on the podium in my first race for the MSS Bathams team; the conditions helped as I wasn't completely comfortable with the bike in the dry and the damp track certainly helped me.
“I don't wish for wet races, but I do seem to get good results in them. The aim of this weekend was to get a few strong finishes and points, so I'm over the moon to be leaving with a podium although it is a shame for the fans the second race was cancelled.”
Rutter's team-mate, Peter Hickman, was less upbeat after has weekend was plagued with trouble as he struggled with set-up, crashed ion warm-up and lost time after being held up as a result of a crash in the race.
Hickman, who ended the race in 16th place, said: “That was a tough weekend to be honest. I couldn't quite get on the pace I wanted, fell in warm-up and then got tangled trying to avoid [Michael] Laverty's accident in the race.
“I'd got off the line well but that put me right back and I ended up battling Tommy Hill till he fell off too. The decision to cancel the second race was right in my opinion, as it was horrible out there. Let's get ourselves to Thruxton - I like it there.”
