Hill hat-trick caps perfect Oulton weekend
9 July 2012
Tommy Hill has sent out the most convincing signal of his determination to retain the MCE British Superbike Championship title by demolishing the opposition to win all three races at Oulton Park.
The Swan Yamaha rider was in superb form around the Cheshire circuit as he qualified on pole position and came incredibly close to leading every lap of all three races (Josh Brookes briefly headed him between Lodge and Old Hall in the third race).
Earning him a perfect haul of 3 wins, 75 points and 9 podium credits, while the structure of the 'Showdown' format means his comfortable 28 point advantage overall stands to be negated in three events time, his resounding domination is nonetheless a warning to closest rivals Brookes and Shane Byrne.
"It was a tough second race no matter how much you are in front as you have to keep pushing,” said Hill, who now makes the trip to Suzuka to test for the upcoming 8 Hours endurance event. “I tried to settle down but that is when you start making mistakes and you cannot underestimate anyone. I made a few errors towards the end of the second race but it set us up well for the final race.
“To have won three races was fantastic as it was my first hat-trick in the series. I didn't ease up in the last race as I definitely had a target on my back as they all wanted to beat me. They kept me honest out there and I had to ride as hard as I could across the whole weekend but I was determined and it is great to head to my home round at Brands Hatch carrying this momentum.”
Hill's third, fourth and fifth wins of the season mean he has notched up 24 podium credits, seven more than second place Byrne.
