Samsung Honda get head-start with Assen test

12 July 2012

Samsung Honda riders Michael Laverty and Jon Kirkham are hoping the decision to make the trip to Assen for a private test will give them an advantage when the British Superbike Championship visits in September.

The popular Dutch circuit will make its debut on the BSB calendar as one of three title 'Showdown' rounds later this year, marking the first time the series has ventured into mainland Europe for an event.

With many of the BSB riders yet to experience the twists and turns of the Netherlands venue, Samsung Honda duly took the opportunity to visit the circuit for a test in both wet and dry conditions as a means of getting an edge on their rivals.

"The circuit has changed since the last time I raced there but I got to grips with it really quickly and it only took a few laps to refresh myself,” said Michael Laverty, who is fourth in the standings. “We were quite lucky really as we had both wet and dry conditions today and in both and we were able to set good lap times. We are looking forward to coming back in September even more now!"

Though only Laverty stands to progress to the top six shootout, team-mate Jon Kirkham – who is currently 14th in the standings – felt the outing was nonetheless benefitting to him.

“It has been a really successful trip to Holland, it was my first time riding the track and it is absolutely awesome. It is different to what I am used to but I set myself a reasonable goal at the start of the day and we matched that so we will definitely be ready to roll when we come back here in September.”
