BSB Rider of the Year vote: 10th
20 December 2012
When you consider that he finished fifth in his maiden season of British Superbike racing in 2009, it is perplexing that a rider of Ian Lowry's calibre would spend the next two years bike-hopping in the pursuit of a full-time competitive ride.
It is probably why the announcement that he had been drafted in to head up Padgetts Honda's return to the BSB stage was met with approval, along with murmurs that he could prove the year's surprise package.
It was expectation he more than fulfilled during the early rounds of the season, Lowry finishing fourth in the truncated opening round before reeling off an unexpected maiden victory during the second round at Thruxton.
It meant, with two events down, Lowry found his name at the top of the overall standings. However, such a moment would prove the zenith of a campaign that dwindled thereafter.
Indeed, Lowry couldn't sustain his fast start to the year, though decent finishes at Snetterton and Oulton Park at least meant he was in contention for a place in the six-way 'Title Showdown'. However, having held down a top six spot for much of the year, he would eventually be edged out by Tommy Bridewell and Alex Lowes at the critical moment, leaving him to chase a best of seventh overall for the remaining events.
In the end, Lowry could muster just one more top ten finish before walking away from the team before the final round, his absence costing him a spot in the overall top ten.
Despite this, Lowry's flashes of brilliance in 2012 at least proved he is deserving of a place on the BSB grid, even if it currently remains to be seen where he can possibly land in 2013.
