'Effortless' Byrne pace ominous for rivals
18 March 2013
Reigning MCE British Superbike champion Shane 'Shakey' Byrne will approach tomorrow's second official British Superbike test at Brands Hatch in buoyant mood after an effortless performance last week.
Byrne was second fastest behind Samsung Honda's Alex Lowes at the opening BSB test at Donington Park on his Rapid Solicitors Kawasaki ZX-10R, but achieved the result 'without pushing' – an ominous sign for his rivals ahead of next month's first round of the championship at Brands.
“It has been a good day for us to have a run out,” said Byrne.
“I didn't do that many laps, but I couldn't believe the pace we were able to run and it came without pushing ourselves as it was only a test.
“Hopefully that is something we can keep up for the entire season although I think championship events could be a different story.”
Byrne is bidding to win the BSB crown for a record fourth time in 2013, turning down the opportunity to compete in the MotoGP CRT class for Paul Bird this season to focus on becoming the most decorated rider in the series' history.
However, he faces formidable opposition, with returning Japanese star Ryuichi Kiyonari also chasing an unprecedented fourth title.
Kiyo partners Alex Lowes in the official Honda squad and concluded last week's Donington test in third position on the timesheets.
“We did some more work with some different parts and we have learnt more again after Cadwell Park,” Kiyonari told the British Superbike website.
“We have been doing some more back-to-back work but it got colder in the afternoon, so we just made sure that we did lots of laps because this is important.
“I think we can make some more changes next week; I have been very happy to be back on track with some of the other riders.”
