Brands BSB: Byrne begins as he means to go on
8 April 2013
Defending British Superbike Champion Shane Byrne says he has reason to be pleased with his pair of podiums, including a race win, from the opening round of the 2013 season at Brands Hatch.
The Kent rider, who is bidding to become the first man to win four BSB titles this year, has been in excellent form throughout the curtain raiser as he topped both dry practice sessions and proceeded to qualify on pole position.
It was an advantage he put to good use in race one as he converted pole position into a race win after staving off the threat of initial leader Josh Brookes and later Alex Lowes.
"It's nice to get the first two races and pre-season nerves out of the way and to come away with a first and a third is a good start and I'm happy with how the day's gone. The first race couldn't have gone any better to be fair and once I decided to make my move I was able to open up a bit of a cushion over Alex.”
The eighth time Byrne has won at Brands Hatch in his last ten starts there, the Rapid Solicitors Kawasaki rider was in contention to make it a ninth success in race two as he sized up long-time leader James Ellison in the closing stages.
However, am erroneous attempt to overtake at Surtees with three laps to go would send Byrne across the grass, dropping him to third place at the chequered flag. Despite the error, Byrne holds down an early lead in the standings and he is happy with his day's efforts.
“I was biding my time in the second race as well and thought James had presented me with an opportunity but he tipped in earlier than I anticipated and it was very close! Luckily we had a gap to the rest of the field and I was able to rejoin in third so with a win and a third, and a one point championship lead, its all been good."
