Camier resists Easton for 18th victory

Leon Camier has ensured he will come away from the 2009 British Superbike Championship having won at least one race per round after triumphing in the second encounter of the weekend at Oulton Park.

The new champion put on a confident performance in tricky conditions around the Cheshire circuit, working his way up the order from fourth before resisting the last lap attentions of Stuart Easton.

An 18th victory of the season for the Airwaves Yamaha rider, he began the race slowly once again again, slotting into fourth behind Easton, Tommy Hill and James Ellison. As a measure of Camier's ability to work his way to the front, 17 of his wins have occurred despite the fact he hasn't been leading into the first bend. Easton, on the other hand, has managed led into turn one 14 times…

With Hill losing out to Ellison by Cascades, the front group quickly divided into Hydrex-Airwaves-Hydrex-Airwaves before Ellison swept into the lead at Lodge towards the end of the opening lap.

From here, Ellison quickly began to stretch his advantage, the Cumbrian pulling Easton along with him as the pair established a gap over Hill, Camier and Guintoli.

Eventually, Camier would scramble his way past Hill on lap three before promptly working his way back onto the tail of both Easton and Ellison, the two having closed up again after a brief attempt by Ellison to put air between himself and his rival.

Quickly putting the pressure on Easton, Camier slipped through decisively on lap seven at Lodge, the Scot offering the merest of gaps to allow his sparring partner to pounce.

Ellison was proving a more difficult prospect though, the damp circuit from earlier showers offering up few dry patches off the racing line. Nonetheless, Camier eventually made his move on the inside of the Island left-hander before holding his line into Shell.

He timed the move right too after a blow-out for Ian Lowry just behind necessitated a safety car to give marshals the chance for a quick inspection.
