Martin Short's Rollcentre Racing team has seen its hopes of securing the Avon Tyres British GT Championship come to an end after the MSA National Court ruled that the Mosler MT900 is no longer eligible to run in the GT3 class of the series.
Rollcentre's Dan Brown has picked up 60 points so far this season to lie just nine behind championship leaders David and Godfrey Jones, but a series of protests from the Jones' Preci-Spark team has led to Brown losing all points scored from the Snetterton event onwards.
With the MSA Court ruling declaring that the Mosler can now only race in the Invitational Class – and therefore not score championship points – Brown's hopes of lifting the title have been brought to a premature end after what had been an impressive campaign from the teenager.
The decision to exclude the Mosler has been taken due to grey area within the wording of the British GT regulations, with an apparent oversight by series organisers SRO leading to questions about its eligibility.
Despite not carrying full FIA homologation, the Mosler was allowed to compete in the Belgium British GT Championship under National homologation rules and was allowed to compete in the British GT Championship on similar grounds – with SRO informing Mosler that the car would be allowed in the series.
However, nothing was written into the regulations to state that that cars running to both FIA and National homologation would be eligible for the championship, with the Preci-Spark team launching numerous protests against the MT900.
Despite the entry of the Mosler being accepted at the start of the season, and at each round of the campaign, following 'written and verbal affirmation that National GT3 cars were eligible', the car has now been deemed to be outside the GT3 rules.
Adding further fuel to the fire, the lack of an Ascari team in the European GT3 Championship means that the car campaigned by the Jones' didn't take part in performance equalisation tests for FIA GT3 and has been able to run without measures that were in place last season – including an extra 80 kg of ballast.
"We took part in the British GT this year to compete in the GT3 class against other high performance and competitive race teams for the National British GT title, something the Invitation class does not offer,” Rollcentre and Mosler chief Short said. “The fact that this unfortunate, semantic incongruity has now befallen us, with three quarters of the Championship gone by, and with the best young driver in BGT since Jonny Cocker taken out of the title running simply beggars belief.
”Hopefully, the British GT Championship will return to a better state next year. In the meantime, we will run where we are welcomed.
“As a postscript, I find it incredible that the MSA approves the regulations, and then decides they are wrong. Moslers were running under these specific regulations three years ago.”
