New look British GT schedule revealed

Series promoters SRO reveal a new look calendar for the 2010 British GT Championship calendar
Series promoter SRO has announced the calendar for the 2010 Avon Tyres British GT Championship calendar, featuring 14 races over eight rounds.

The season will kick off as per usual with the Oulton Park Easter weekend meeting before the trip to Scotland for the event at Knockhill. The series will then have its only meeting on foreign soil in France, as Magny-Cours returns to the schedule for the first time since 2006.

After a break in June, the season resumes with rounds at Snetterton and Rockingham before the first of two two-hour events on the Silverstone Grand Prix circuit.

The Brands Hatch GP circuit will host the penultimate rounds of the year before the season finale – another two hour race – will be held at Donington Park in Octorber and will run 'into the night'.

In a change in format for the new season, testing on Friday will no longer take place with two hour long sessions taking place on Saturday instead ahead of two 15 minute long qualifying sessions. All racing – be it two one hour races or one two hour race – will then take place on the Sunday.

The calendar also avoids any clashes with major UK events like the BTCC and a clash with the Le Mans 24 Hours.

"We are very pleased with the provisional dates and the venues," Bernadette Fitzsimons, general manager of SRO Motorsports Group, said. "The competitors were adamant that they wanted to retain eight events in total, and that has enabled us to include Knockhill on the provisional calendar, which we are very pleased about because it will give us once again the chance to work with Knockhill's enthusiastic and helpful staff.

"We are also delighted to be returning to the Grand Prix circuit at Silverstone, which is a particular favourite of the drivers, and are excited to be able to plan an 'into the night' race at Donington Park. This is proposed as a two-hour endurance event with refuelling pit stops, and should make for a really dramatic finale to the championship."

The series has already announced a new class structure for 2010, including the return of a Cup Class for older cars and amateur drivers.
