Pirelli is to step up its contribution to the British Superbike Championship by offering an extra rear compound to Superbike and Supersport competitors.
It brings the number of compounds available to riders in both series to four in Superbikes and three in Supersports, plus wet and intermediate rubber, while it also expands Pirelli's 6,000 tyre per event commitment.
Entering the second season of a multi-year deal to be the sole tyre supplier in the British Superbike Championship, the work carried out has helped Britain's World Superbike graduates get immediately on the pace on the international stage.
It is something Pirelli racing manager Jason Griffiths is keen to expand upon in 2009 having now acquired a year of experience supplying to the whole BSB series.
“We learnt a lot in 2008 with a major logistical presence in BSB and a very high benchmark to hit at what is unquestionably the most competitive domestic race series in the world. Our team also know the way all the race-squads work now and so we can really hit the ground running.”
GSE Airwaves Yamaha team manager Colin Wright was also impressed with the commitment the Italian manufacturer has shown in the past year.
“We were really interested to see how Pirelli would step up to supplying the whole grid. Also as a team that previously had a direct tyre contract, we were keen to ensure we would still receive a personal service.
“I can honestly say we were impressed in the consistency and performance of the tyres. They have also helped to make the whole series a more level playing field, which has got to be good for the fans.”
