Airwaves Yamaha team manager Colin Wright has sent out a warning to its British Superbike Championship rivals by claiming the race-winning R1 is only '75 per cent there'.
Just four days after the bike turned its first wheel in free practice, Leon Camier gave the 'big-hang' R1 a superb victory debut after a convincing performance in the second race of the day at Brands Hatch.
Well beyond what the team had targeted before the weekend, Wright says they would have been merely happy to repeat the pair of top five results they managed in the opening race.
Nonetheless, despite anticipating a steady build-up to launching a title challenge this year, Camier's performance has immediately established the defending champions as one of the teams to beat once again.
Furthermore, Wright claims there is more to come as the current bike isn't the complete World Superbike-specification package that they have signed up for.
“The bike is only 75 per cent there,” he revealed to Crash.net Radio
. “We have another 25 per cent to go in terms of getting the package of the World Superbike team. When we get that, I'm convinced Leon and James will be there week-in, week-out.
“I am delighted for the team. There are so many people to thank because it has been a remarkable effort by everyone concerned. But we've come away with an almost perfect result. We got fourth and fifth in the first race and if we'd done the same in the second race, we'd have been happy, so to come away with a race win was lucky I guess!”
When asked where they are chasing improvements, Wright says the bike is still down on power to its rivals, a claim substantiated by Camier being just 16th quickest through the speed trap.
“People may laugh at this and say I'm lying, but I can assure you that our machine is at least 15bhp down on the others and I think it showed,” he added. “As Leon highlighted, there was only one place you can pass, and that was set up from the bottom of Graham Hill Bend.
“He made the pass on the right-hander every time because he wasn't going to do it down the back straight. Both Leon and James got passed by Shane there last year, so they knew how to achieve it. We just had to set up the bike so they could do it.”
