Sylvain Guintoli was rather surprised to learn that his run to second position on the grid in the latest round of the British Superbike Championship was set with a time that was within a second of what he managed during the 2008 MotoGP race at Donington Park.

The Frenchman ran Leon Camier close in the battle for pole position, but 'two little mistakes' would see Guintoli fall short by a mere six hundredths of a second.

Nonetheless, he was satisfied with his performance, claiming he could not have gotten much more out of the Worx Crescent Suzuki beyond the errors.

"It was a good qualifying session overall," he told Radio. "I made two little mistakes in the lap, but it was a very fast lap. It is the first time I got a lot out of the bike and I couldn't do much more. Without those two little mistakes it could have been a 1min 30secs, but it is the front row again, so it is good for tomorrow.

Producing a best lap time of 1min 31.111secs, it was just seven tenths off what Guintoli managed during the 2008 British Grand Prix aboard the Alice Ducati with what he claims are race settings.

"I feel good. I have never been so fast around this track, even on a MotoGP bike. I am off my best lap time in the race by 0.7secs, with race settings. I feel confident on the brakes and while there are a few areas to improve, generally I feel great."
