Mason 'hanging in there' at Donington

Gary Mason was delighted to come away with another top ten finish in the latest round of the British Superbike Championship at Donington Park, even if he is aware the competition is getting increasingly tough.

Although set-up problems in the first race saw Mason fall from an early eighth to an eventual 12th, tweaks in between invigorated the Quay Garage Honda, allowing him to complete a seventh place finish – his fifth top ten result in six races.

Ensuring a sixth consecutive Cup victory and eighth in the overall standings, Mason was pleased to have maintained his fine start to the season, despite the increasing strength in competition around him.

“I have to admit it has been harder than ever to get those results because everyone has stepped their game up, such as Chris Walker up on the podium,” he told Radio. “The team has worked really hard because we have been struggling a bit with the set-up, and in the end we went back to what we know and it paid off for the second race.”

Indeed, Mason confesses that, despite the quality of the Quay Garage team, he is frustrated that there is only so much he can do with a two-year-old package.

“For me, the dream is to be on the main podium and I want to be there so bad, so it is quite frustrating to see the leaders pulling away. I need that extra half a second, but the bike is in its third season. It's difficult, although I am enjoying it more than ever.

“The Cup is fantastic for the team and that is what it is all about. We are genuine Cup team - we haven't got a budget of even £50,000, but this is how it is. We are really hanging in there!”

Such a shame.The opening at Suzuki was made for Gary who i think would do the ride justice and be a more than adequate replacement for Ginters.He even has enough points to catch up and take the fight to the GSE boys.Oh well,Keep plugging away Gary.
