Kirkham suffers hand injury at Knockhill

Rob Mac Racing's Jon Kirkham suffered a 'pretty hard' crash in qualifying on Saturday for the sixth round of the 2009 ViSK.com British Superbike Championship at Knockhill.

Kirkham had been making pretty good progress over the weekend on his North West 200 Yamaha and was happy with his set-up for Sunday's races.

However in the second qualifying session he got caught out at Leslie's and went off injuring his hand. The team has said that it is too early to tell the extent of the damage, but they are hoping it is not too bad.

"I can't believe the luck we are having with the red bike," said team boss, Rob Mac. "Dan [Linfoot] is at home recovering from a broken foot and now Jon with a broken hand. I hope they get back on their bikes as soon as possible."

Rob Mac Racing's other two riders, Chris Walker and Graeme Gowland meanwhile both had better luck and were right on the pace.

Indeed Walker will start from the second row, in P7, while Gowland equalled his best BSB qualifying and will start one spot further back in eighth.

"All in all I had a good day in the office!" Walker added. "We have made positive steps with the bike and I can now run good consistent lap times.

"I was really pushing for the front row but after the stoppage I did not have the same grip. I'm up for the battle though and a good start should see me in the mix."

Gowland was also pleased: "That was great. I managed to find some time in the first sector of the track and instantly my times came down.

"I feel like I can run with the front bunch now and if I can hang onto Chris from the start we could have a good day."
