Tommy Bridewell caused a stir by topping second free practice for the opening round of the MCE British Superbike Championship at Brands Hatch, the first dry session of the weekend.
Bridewell, who along with team Quay Garage Honda are graduating to the championship class in 2010, led a tight session, with just one second covering the top 16 riders.
Bridewell went fastest with just under 20 minutes of the session remaining to hold off Suzuki's Tommy Hill by less than two hundredths of a second, while Ryuichi Kiyonari ended up third having held the top spot during the early stages.
James Ellison and Josh Brookes were fourth and fifth quickest to make it four Hondas inside the top five, ahead of Kawasaki's Gary Mason, Yukio Kagayama and Friday pace setter Alastair Seeley.
Elsewhere, there were falls for Simon Andrews at Clearways, the Kawasaki man ending up 20th fastest, while James Edmeades has been left with a soft tissue injury to his knee and an injured left hand after he crashed his KTM.
Of the Evo runners, Steve Brogan moved to the top in 11th position overall aboard the Jentin BMW.
