Frustrating weekend for Kawasaki

A strong second place in Superstock for MSS Colchester Kawasaki proves to be the highlight of a tough Brands Hatch for MSS Colchester Kawasaki
A second place in Superstock proved to the highlight of an otherwise frustrating weekend for the MSS Colchester Kawasaki team at Brands Hatch as the new British Superbike Championship season got underway during the Easter weekend.

Howie Mainwaring battled from thirteenth on the grid to second place only to be pushed back to sixth after missing a fallen rider. He then went on to fight back to second again with some brave overtaking moves for a well deserved runner-up position.

That was in stark contrast to the fortune of the team's two BSB riders, with Simon Andrews and Gary Mason hit by niggling issues during the race weekend.

Both Andrews and Mason slipped off on Saturday with Mason's accident damaging the engine, leading to a complete rebuild and causing an intermittent problem that plagued the machine throughout Sunday. He was then forced to sit out qualifying and had to start from the back of the field in one, coming through to 13th place before being forced to retire from race two.

Andrews meanwhile limped through the first race after going off at Paddock Hill Bend, although he managed to salvage an eighth place finish in race two.

"We started this weekend so strongly and yet had so many difficulties, it's quite hard to take,” team owner Nick Morgan said. “We've got to put this behind us and move on to Thruxton which is a totally different type of circuit.

“Our big highlight of the day has got to be the awesome ride that Howie had in Superstock, he surprised and impressed a lot of people today."
