Wrist injury forces Burns to withdraw

Chris Burns: I'm gutted, I came here to race and I've tried my best but it would be crazy to go out there on it as it is.
Chris Burns has been forced to pull out of today's two BSB-EVO championship races after his injured wrist failed to heal in time.

The Splitlath Motorsport Aprilia rider had hoped the surgery wounds from his operation 12 days ago would heal in time to race at Oulton Park today. The former MotoGP rider had travelled to Belgium after the second round at Thruxton a fortnight ago to see renowned specialist Dr Claes, in a bid to sort out his particularly severe bout of tendonitis.

But despite being told he may be able to race this weekend, earlier practice and yesterday's qualifying session proved too painful, forcing him to withdraw this morning.

“I'm gutted, I came here to race and I've tried my best but it would be crazy to go out there on it as it is,” he said. “I've been out and done several laps in each session so far, and it was impossible. I don't think I could've managed half distance.

“The sad thing is that had I had another week, I'm pretty sure it would've been fine. It's clearly needed more time, that's all.”

With a few weeks until the next round at Cadwell Park, Burns knows that his wrist will be well enough by then, but admits to being frustrated at being sidelined: “No rider wants to come to a round and then not go out, but it's just one of those things,” he added.

“It's annoying because I came here lying third in the championship, and I know that won't be the case by the end of the day because the rivals are all out there. It means I've got twice as much work to do when I come back, but it's far from over.”
