Consistent Hickman scores first BSB podium at Thruxton

Peter Hickman continues to improve his British Superbike results as he grabs a second place finish at Thruxton - his first BSB podium.
Peter Hickman consolidated his status as one of the year's British Superbike Championship surprise packages by scoring his first podium finish at Thruxton.

The 24-year-old is enjoying a strong first season with Tyco Honda having persevered with his self-run Ultimate team in Superbikes for the last two seasons.

Indeed, while his team-mate Tommy Bridewell stole the headlines with his run to the podium at Brands Hatch, Hickman has arguably been the faster of the pair since then, culminating in his strong performance throughout the Thruxton weekend.

Qualifying in fifth position, Hickman was straight up at the front of both races, leading the opening encounter briefly before being bundled down to the fifth at the chequered flag as his tyres faded late on. Nonetheless, Hickman finished what he started in race two, getting a good start to run up towards the front before prevailing in an entertaining scrap with Michael Rutter – who would crash late on - to claim second position.

It means Hickman finds himself up to a surprise sixth position in the overall standings after eight races, ahead of Ryuichi Kiyonari, Rutter and Jon Kirkham.

"I am over the moon to have finished on the podium,” he told the British Superbike website. “It has been two hard races and I feel that all the hard work from the past few months has now really started to pay off as we have been pushing on all weekend. I need to thank everyone who has helped me get this far and it is great to be with Tyco Honda on a bike that has the potential to really win races.

“We did a good lap on a race tyre in qualifying and I felt quite confident today; I just knew I needed to get my head down and do my best and I am so happy with this podium. I hope that now we have one we can keep pushing on and make it a regular thing!"

Hickman has lowered his personal best result with every round, taking ninth at Brands Hatch, eighth at Oulton Park and seventh at Croft, before finishing fifth and second at Thruxton. Hickman is also the only rider to have scored in every BSB race this season, though this means his current provisional shootout entry needs to take into account two dropped scores (six points in total).
