Lowes extends MSS Colchester deal, Pitt joins team

Thruxton pole sitter Alex Lowes will ride the MSS Colchester Kawasaki for the remainder of the 2011 British Superbike season, as former MotoGP, WSBK and WSS rider Andrew Pitt joins as crew chief.
MSS Colchester has confirmed it has signed Alex Lowes for a full season on the Kawasaki, while former World Supersport Championship Andrew Pitt is coming on board as Gary Mason's new crew chief.

Lowes made the switch to the Kawasaki UK-backed team at Thruxton as a replacement for the injured Stuart Easton, just days after parting ways with EVO team WFR Honda.

The youngster duly stunned the British Superbike paddock by claiming a pole position on his debut, though rainy conditions come race day would consign him to a solitary seventh place finish.

Nonetheless, Lowes's performance has prompted MSS Colchester Kawasaki to extend his deal to the end of the season, much to his delight.

“I'm so happy to be signed up by MSS for the season, what a turn around from a few weeks ago,” said Lowes, twin brother of World Supersport front runner Sam. “Obviously I'm here due to someone else's misfortune so I can't lose sight of that but I hope I can do the team proud from here on in. My aim has got to be to try and get in that top six and I feel privileged to be in one of the best teams in the paddock.”

Ahead of the Knockhill round of the series, MSS Colchester Kawasaki also confirmed the acquisition of 2001 and 2008 WSS champion Pitt, who will join Mason's side of the garage as a crew chief.

The Australian, who won the 2001 WSS title for Kawasaki, has not raced since completing a handful of BSB outings for Motorpoint Yamaha last season. Nonetheless, Mason is certain his influence will be crucial to turning his season around.

“It's been a horrendous few weeks, probably the biggest low of my career being involved with the crash with Stuart [at the North West 200]. “I'm so glad we got over to see him last week, he's going to need everyone behind him over the next few months.

“For me I want Knockhill to go where Croft left off. Thruxton was a non-event for me, race pace in race two was mega but we obviously started from pitlane. Having Pitty in my corner has given me loads of confidence but I need a huge points haul at Knockhill.”

This is the best thing that could have happened from the disaster of Easton's accident. I think Alex will do full justice to the work that Stuart has put into making that bike a front runner. Alex is a star of the future.
