Byrne 'disappointed' with Hopkins contact

The HM Plant Honda still retains the series lead, but Hopkins is now just one point adrift in terms of podium credits.
Shane Byrne says he was disappointed to be denied a possible win in the second British Superbike Championship race at Snetterton after John Hopkins's forceful overtaking attempt dropped him to fourth on the final lap.

The HM Plant Honda rider looked set to claim victory after snatching the lead on the penultimate revolution with a fine pass through the fast Coram right-hander.

However, Hopkins's determined efforts to retake the lead would see him attempt a re-pass at the slow Oggie's bend, the pair making contact and being sent wide on the exit. While Hopkins would go on to take third place, Byrne was dropped to a somewhat unsatisfying fourth. Indeed, the former champion was frustrated to see victory go by the wayside.

“The team has been working hard and in race two the boys had done such a great job to improve the HM Plant Honda Fireblade; by the restart I felt we had the pace to challenge for the win. It has taken us longer than expected to get up to the pace we needed this weekend and the HM Plant Honda Fireblade was feeling fantastic.

“The race had been pretty hectic and I had got in front of Hopper the lap before and I was obviously disappointed to be taken out. He has since apologised but I was a bit gutted really as I thought I could have won that second race for HM Plant Honda. We will have to try and get that win at Oulton Park now!"

Coupled to his third place finish in race one, it means Byrne adds just one podium credit to his tally after Snetterton, while closest rival Hopkins gains four to move a provisional one point behind in the 'shootout standings'.
