Top 10 BSB Rider of the Year 2011: 7. Graeme Gowland

Nationality: British Team: Team WFR Bike: Honda CBR1000RR EVO Wins: 0 (13 in the EVO class) Podiums: 0 (15 in the EVO class) Championship points: 92 (396 in the EVO class) Championship position: 13th (2nd in the EVO class)

Though each Team WFR rider - five of them in all - had their time to shine in 2011, it is Graeme Gowland that has arguably come away as its star performer.

A welcome - if unexpected - revelation over the second-half of the season, though Gowland had shown flashes of promise in his maiden BSB season with Motorpoint Yamaha in 2009 and been a fine addition to the British Supersport ranks in 2010, he was certainly expected to give second-best to the more experienced Glen Richards aboard to EVO-specification Honda.

When Gowland proceeded to injure himself in the very first race of the season, the spotlight deviated even further from him, instead being trained on team-mates Alex Lowes and then Richards.

However, having spent the first-half of the season at a canter in an effort to get back to full strength, Gowland launched into a sprint over the latter half, demolishing his EVO competition and several of the championship class teams.

From the second Brands Hatch visit onwards, Gowland was in impeccable form, almost sweeping the board with 11 EVO wins over the final 12 races, though it was the results that had him regularly qualifying and finishing inside the top ten that really grabbed attention to establish him as 2011's breakout star.

Indeed, having spent the final half of the year finishing just behind accomplished rivals that are coming down to his level in 2012 with their EVO-inspired machinery, Gowland suddenly looks very much the dark horse for the new season...
