Samsung Honda's Jon Kirkham made a dream start to the MCE British Superbike Championship as he capitalised on a mistake by race leader Alastair Seeley to snatch victory on the final lap.
Tyco Suzuki rider Seeley lost traction at Clearways and was lifted from the saddle of his GSX-R1000, allowing Kirkham to power through and gain enough momentum to take the chequered flag ahead of the Northern Ireland rider and current British Supersport champion.
It was Kirkham's second ever victory at BSB level and naturally he was 'ecstatic' with the manner in which the race panned out.
“First race and first win for Samsung Honda and I am ecstatic. I knew there would be a few incidents but I just kept my head down,” he said.
“The safety car mixed me up a bit but then Alastair Seeley nipped up the inside of me at Druids and got away a little bit. I started closing back in on him and tried to make a pass at Paddock Hill but it was sliding underneath me.
“I just knew I needed to stay as close as possible to Alastair and then he got a bit sideways out of Clearways and I just went for it.”
Kirkham heads into this weekend's second round of the series at Brands Hatch as the championship leader after the second race at Brands yesterday was cancelled due to inclement weather and an oil spill on the Indy course.
