Shane Byrne relieved to finish in tricky conditions at Brands

'We have had very little time on the bike in the wet so it was a bit of a gamble with the settings and we perhaps went the wrong way' - Shane Byrne
Former double British Superbike champion Shane 'Shakey' Byrne was relieved to score a finish in the slippery conditions at Brands Hatch, although a settings gamble with his Rapid Solicitors Kawasaki perhaps didn't pay off.

Byrne, who qualified on the front row, was able to run with the leaders in the early stages but dropped off the pace and finished seventh after being passed by Tommy Bridewell on the final lap of the race.

“I didn't even know where I'd even finished in the first race, there was just so much going on but considering the conditions I was happy just to bring the bike home,” he said.

“We have had very little time on the bike in the wet so it was a bit of a gamble with the settings and we perhaps went the wrong way.

“I was hoping to put it right in race two but quite rightly the race was postponed so we'll move on to Thruxton next weekend and hope we can get the Rapid Solicitors Kawasaki up at the front.”

Scot Stuart Easton on the second of Paul Bird's ZX-10Rs in the race was forced to retire after encountering a major handling issue.

The Hawick rider, who was consistently on the pace during dry practice on his return to BSB following serious injuries sustained in a crash at last year's North West 200, said discretion was the better part of valour as he opted to pull in to the pits.

“Overall we've had a good weekend and in the dry I was very happy with the way things were going but in the wet we struggled a little as it's the first time in 18 months I've actually raced in the wet. Rather than a silly crash I thought we'd pull in and make the changes for race two but that never happened,” said Easton.

“It's all good experience and we've got a lot of data and it's good to be back on a bike again at a race meeting.”
