Michael Laverty makes breakthrough with victory at Snetterton

'We made some slight tweaks to the Samsung Honda and it worked awesome; I just knew I needed to make a break and not make any mistakes' - Michael Laverty
Samsung Honda's Michael Laverty finally made the breakthrough his pre-season form promised with a stunning victory and runner-up finish at Snetterton.

The Northern Ireland rider had endured a difficult beginning to his MCE British Superbike Championship title bid in the opening three rounds of the season, but Laverty showed his class on the CBR1000RR Fireblade as he left the Norfolk venue with 45 points from a possible 50 to move into fourth position in the championship standings.

He won the second race in dominant style from Rapid Solicitors Kawasaki rider Shane Byrne, who narrowly held off Tyco Suzuki's Josh Brookes to seal the runner-up spot.

At one stage Laverty led the race by almost five seconds, but he eased off the pace in the closing stages to take the chequered flag by 1.3 seconds to become the seventh different winner in BSB so far this season.

“I suppose you could say it was lucky number seven for me,” said Laverty afterwards.

“Hopefully that's us now off and running. We had some issues with the bike after Oulton, but thanks to the Samsung Honda team we have rectified them.

“I made a small change after the first race and we were on the pace in the early laps,” he added.

“I just got my head down and went from there. I hoped I could pull a gap and I managed it, so I'm over the moon.

“We're getting the Honda in the zone now and I'm looking forward to the next round at Knockhill. It's like a home round for me and it should be a good circuit for the Honda.”

Laverty will join the Honda TT Legends team for the Endurance World Championship round in Qatar next weekend as a replacement rider along with former BSB hero Ryuichi Kiyonari.

The event clashes with the Isle of Man TT races where Honda Legends regulars John McGuinness and Simon Andrews are flying the flag for the official Honda team.

Of his victory, Laverty added: “We made some slight tweaks to the Samsung Honda and it worked awesome; I just knew I needed to make a break and not make any mistakes.

“On the last lap I was looking at the crowd and really enjoying it, knowing I was the seventh race winner as that is my lucky number.

“I have to thank the team for their hard work for us to achieve these podiums as the Samsung Honda Fireblade was working fantastically.”
