James Westmoreland has shown he isn't to be discounted in the fight for the MCE British Superbike 'Title Showdown' by pacing second free practice at Donington Park.

The WFR Honda rider is currently 21 points behind his team-mate Alex Lowes in the fight for the sixth and final Title Showdown spot, but hinted that he will be in contention if his rivals hit problems by going quickest in FP2.

Edging out fellow Honda rider Michael Laverty on the Samsung-backed machine, the pair were split by a mere 0.017secs, with third and fourth place Josh Brookes and Lowes just a tenth further behind.

With the top six containing the same riders as the top six from FP1, albeit in a different order, Alastair Seeley was fifth fastest on the second of the Tyco Suzukis, while Luca Scassa was sixth best for Padgetts Honda.

Barry Burrell was another to maintain his strong form from earlier in the day to go seventh best for Buildbase BMW, ahead of Tommy Hill – down in eighth after a fall at Coppice –, Michael Rutter and Showdown contender Ian Lowry.

Of the other riders competing for a Showdown spot, Tommy Bridewell – who is currently fifth in the standings – improved to 14th fastest, ahead of Noriyuki Haga in 16th, the Japanese rider fortunate not to aggravate his injured collarbone more when he tumbled at Redgate.
