Michael Laverty enjoyed a highly successful day at Donington Park yesterday as he finished third and second in the two MCE British Superbike races.

The Northern Ireland rider was in sizzling form on the Samsung Honda Fireblade in the ninth round of the championship - the final meeting before the title-deciding Showdown stage of the series.

Aussie Josh Brookes was in a class of his own as he notched up a double for the Ulster-based Tyco Suzuki team.

It wasn't plain sailing for Laverty though, who had to battle through from 10th place on the grid after a crash in final qualifying on Saturday.

"These have been solid results though I gave myself a lot of work with the tumble and third row start for the first race," he said.

"But after a poor start I was back in the hunt and scoring a podium credit point. In the second race I made a little mistake and that gave Josh Brookes half a second.

"He rode strongly all weekend but we worked hard and going into the Showdown and I am looking forward to going to Assen."

Brookes dominated race one, but was made to work for his victory in the second outing as Laverty repeatedly attempted to deny him a double.

In the end though Brookes had that little more in reserve and was able to repel the former British Supersport champion to thrown down the gauntlet ahead of the three-round Showdown.
