Title fighter Bridewell eyeing podiums

'Title fighter' Tommy Bridewell sets his sights on his first podiums of the year as he prepares to challenge for the 2012 MCE British Superbike Championship title.
Tommy Bridewell says it may only take a single mistake from his rivals to give him a shot at the MCE British Superbike Championship crown as he prepares to make his first 'Title Showdown' appearance.

The 24-year-old heads into the final three rounds of the 2012 season as one of six riders capable of fighting for the title, the Englishman confounding pre-season expectations to crack the top five after in the nine events leading up to the 'Title Showdown'.

Indeed, it's easy to forget that Bridewell very nearly didn't make it onto the grid this year having only been called up by Supersonic BMW – itself a newcomer to the BSB series - on the eve of the season getting underway after ex-MotoGP rider Anthony West deferred to Moto2.

Despite the lack of pre-season testing, Bridewell has been outside the top ten on just three occasions throughout the year and though he hasn't made it onto the podium as yet, he gave a glimpse of his best when he finished fourth at Donington Park from 13th on the grid.

With the pressure off heading into the final three events at Assen, Silverstone and Brands Hatch, though Bridewell remains an outsider for the title, he feels his consistency could serve him well as the stakes increase.

"Looking at Assen I think this could be a good round for everyone to have a real good battle as the last two rounds have been our toughest yet in terms of us being behind everyone else who had tested which won't be the case there,” Bridewell told the BSB website.

“We have a 35 point disadvantage to Hill but if we can keep pushing over the last few rounds then who knows what might happen.

“One mistake by someone else can put us in contention if we are consistently aiming for those podiums and that is what we need to do now. I will be giving 110% to get us on the podium and further up those championship standings."

Despite the equalised points system, Bridewell's lack of podiums means he starts the three-round showdown on 500 points, while Tommy Hill begins on 535 points, Josh Brookes on 525, Shane Byrne on 523, Michael Laverty on 514 and Alex Lowes on 502.

I wish Tommy well. A hothead no more and the better for it. Have to say the 'shoot out' or whatever the points system is called is deeply, deeply stupid and it's a shame race-goers haven't voted with their feet by refusing to support such crass idiocy.
