Alex Lowes has sent out a warning that he cannot be discounted for MCE British Superbike title glory this weekend as he emerged comfortably fastest in second free practice at Brands Hatch.

Fresh from his double win at Silverstone, Lowes has reduced to gap to leader Shane Byrne to 24 points with just three races remaining, a margin he thinks he can overcome if he can maintain his current run of strong form.

Based on his performance in FP2, when he emerged four tents faster than Byrne with a superb lap in the final minute of the session, WFR Honda rider Lowes suggests he will come good on his promise to keep the pressure on his rivals.

Despite the gap, FP1 pace setter Byrne remains in close company in second position, the Rapid Solicitors Kawasaki rider being joined in the 1min 26secs bracket by the impressive Barry Burrell on the Buildbase BMW.

Byrne's closest title rival Josh Brookes ran at the top of the timesheets early on in the session before slipping to fourth, ahead of Karl Harris and James Westmoreland.

The session was briefly red flagged with eight minutes remaining when Tommy Bridewell crashed heavily at Stirling's, the Supersonic BMW rider – who is also in with a shout of the title this weekend – taken to the medical centre for checks.

Despite his fall, Bridewell was still ninth fastest, behind fellow title rivals Michael Laverty and Tommy Hill, while Chris Walker completed the top ten.
