Shane Byrne is celebrating becoming British Superbike Champion for the third time in his career as he wrapped up the 2012 title in outstanding style with a trio of victories at Brands Hatch.

Coming into the weekend with a slim nine point lead over Josh Brookes - but memories of being a double winner around the same circuit earlier in the season - Byrne showed again why he is considered a master of the GP layout as he swept to a trio of wins.

An emphatic way to put the 2012 crown out of his rivals' reach, Byrne's title with Rapid Solicitors Kawasaki adds to his successes in 2003 when he rode for Paul Bird Monstermob Ducati and in 2008 with Airwaves GSE Ducati.

Ending the season with eight race victories, more than any rider in 2012, Byrne was delighted to secure another championship win with Paul Bird almost a decade after the first.

"That's not bad for a weekend's work and whereas the previous two British titles I've won have been wrapped up well in advance this one went right down to the final race so it's probably the hardest," he said.

"I'd like to pay tribute to the team for giving me the tools to do the business this season and it's great to work with Paul Bird once again."

Looking ahead to the future, Byrne has been tipped to join Paul Bird's MotoGP CRT entry in 2013, though the man himself admits he is keen on the idea of going for a historic fourth title.

"What it now means is I have to think about coming back here next year to defend the title as I'd like to beat the record of three championship victories achieved by Niall Mackenzie and Ryuichi Kiyonari!"
