Perfect scoresheet propels Brookes to runners-up spot

Josh Brookes finishes all but two races inside the top four to record the highest number of points over the course of the 2012 British Superbike season.
Though he isn't celebrating his first MCE British Superbike Championship title, Josh Brookes says he can take satisfaction from the knowledge that he was the highest scoring rider over the length of the season.

The Australian was Shane Byrne's closest rival coming into the final round at Brands Hatch, but had no answer to his rival when he reeled off a trio of wins, Brookes forced to settle for the runners-up spot for the second time in his BSB career.

Even so, Brookes can look back on his year with pleasure having finished each of the 26 races inside the top ten without a single retirement. In fact, Brookes's worst result of tenth came in the very first race before going on to finish all but one of the next 25 races inside the top four.

Coupled to his four wins, Brookes would have won the title under the former championship format, but the Tyco Suzuki rider says Shane Byrne remains a very worthy champion.

“After the first two races of the weekend I admit I was off as I could see the championship slipping away from me. But now that it's over, I'm fully relaxed and happy with the effort we all made this year. We've been really consistent, finished every race and I haven't crashed during any of the races; I've given it my all.

“If we were working on conventional points I would have won the championship but that's the way it goes. The Showdown format can work for you or in this case against you. Shakey is a great rider and full credit to him, but I'll be back looking to take that number one spot next year.

“Thanks to everyone for their effort: To our sponsors Tyco and all the other associate sponsors who showed up in force this year to support the team; to Suzuki for a great bike and of course my team who I cannot fault. It's back to Australia now to recharge the batteries, then I'll be back for more in 2013.”

Brookes has already re-signed with Tyco Suzuki for 2013.

Might as well chuck the top 3 riders names into a hat and draw out a winner that way. Farcical. Or how about maybe.. the rider who scores the most points and is therefore the best over the course of the season wins the championship? How crazy would that be!

Well Done Josh! You are a credit to the championship! Always exciting to watch, and after reading your comments a good all round bloke, nice to acknowledge Shakey as a worthy Champion as he was in the same situation as you last year whereby he'd be champion under the old scoring system. I look forward to seeing you battle next year & hope you are crowned champion, a worthy champion!
