With no pole positions, wins or even podiums to his name, James Westmoreland didn't steal many headlines in 2012, but such a fact shouldn't diminish the achievements of a quietly impressive campaign for the youngster.
Securing a full year with the WFR Honda team, following an initial late season switch from Motorpoint Yamaha in 2011, Westmoreland joined Alex Lowes and Graeme Gowland in an ambitious and evenly-matched rider line-up.
With a wry eye on who would emerge as the team's brightest hope, Westmoreland initially nosed ahead of his inter-team rivals during the first-half of the season, the 24-year-old tempering admittedly mid-pack results with an unwavering ability to make it to the chequered flag.
Indeed, Westmoreland suffered just two DNFs during the entire season, while he was outside the top ten on just five occasions when he did reach the finish.
That said, Westmoreland's consistency didn't take him as far as the podium in 2012, his best finish of fourth place coming at the season ending Brands Hatch round. It also meant he would miss out on the chance to progress to the 'Title Showdown', unlike in-form team-mate Lowes.
Even so, Westmoreland was often the only rider to tackle the 'Showdown Six' during the final three rounds, form that would at least help secure him the BSB Riders' Cup for finishing seventh overall, a just reward for a what was a definite improvement on his maiden season.
Though WFR's withdrawal from the series robs Westmoreland the chance to continue that linear progress in 2013, a switch to Buildbase BMW next year at least gives him a solid platform from which to maintain that momentum.
