A mainstay of the British Superbike Championship now, Josh Brookes shrugged off a few of his less positive associations in 2012 by constructing an unwaveringly consistent campaign that almost took him all the way to the title.

A new tact for a rider that has snatched more than a few headlines in recent years with the odd controversy and accident, it only takes a quick look at Brookes's score-sheet to see the benefits of his amended approach, the Australian finishing each of the year's 26 races, 24 of which were completed inside the top four.

It's a remarkable statistic and one that arguably would have been enough to secure him a maiden BSB title under the previous format, but a relative lack of wins compared to Shane Byrne during the three-round 'Title Showdown' would ultimately count against him.

That said, there is much to be said for Brookes's blend of pace and reliability in 2012, his win at Thruxton from a mid-pack grid position, his double triumph at Donington Park and his last gasp victory at Assen proving he can still turn on blistering speed when it matters.

Nonetheless, having seen his reputation coloured by the odd spectacular moment in previous years, the more mellow approach of Brookes in 2012 could be a prelude to even greater things in 2013...
