Young gun Glenn Irwin rues Cartagena mistake

'I'd had quite a good feeling on the bike but was just a little bit over exuberant and got caught out with the conditions' - Glenn Irwin
Northern Irishman Glenn Irwin admitted that 'over-exuberance' led to a heavy spill during his maiden test on the Mar-Train Yamaha at Cartagena in Spain last week.

The young Ulsterman was drafted into the team for the 2013 British Supersport Championship alongside the experienced Stuart Easton, but Irwin was forced to watch from the sidelines on day two of the four-day shakedown as he recovered from the tumble.

He utilised the time to sit in on the team's debriefs with Easton and returned to action on the third and fourth days of the test.

“It obviously didn't start the way I wanted with a big crash on the opening day,” said Irwin.

“I'd had quite a good feeling on the bike but was just a little bit over exuberant and got caught out with the conditions.

“I missed the second day to heal up and also to let the boys work on the bike,” he added.

“I got out in the last session on day three and it was just a steady 12-lap run, and was only a few tenths off what we had achieved on day one – even though I was riding conservatively.”

Irwin will regroup ahead of this week's official test at Donington Park as he attempts to rebuild his confidence following his Cartagena mishap.

“It's now just a matter of building my confidence again, but the team has been fantastic, especially after heavily damaging a bike on my first day with them,” he said.

“But it's been a great experience working with them all and also with Stuart – and it can only get better from here on in.”
