Byrne toasts record feat at Thruxton

'To come away with the double is superb and becoming the most successful rider in BSB just adds to that' - Shane Byrne
Rapid Solicitors Kawasaki rider Shane 'Shakey' Byrne said he was a 'happy man' after becoming the most successful rider ever in the MCE British Superbike Championship.

The three-times BSB champion wrapped up a double at Thruxton to stretch his lead in the 2013 standings and boost his win tally to 44 - one more than the previous record held by Japan's Ryuichi Kiyonari.

Byrne won the opening race after timing his move to perfection to pass Tyco Suzuki's Josh Brookes on the final corner on the last lap.

The 36-year-old also clinched victory in race two, which he was leading from Samsung Honda's Alex Lowes when the red flags were deployed following a crash involving PR Kawasaki's Karl Harris and Tommy Bridewell on the Bathams Honda.

Bridewell was reported to have sustained a gash to his leg as a result of the incident.

A delighted Byrne, who has commenced the defence of his title in superb style with three wins from four races, said: "To come away with the double is superb and becoming the most successful rider in BSB just adds to that.

"I really wanted to put on a show in the second race but we just couldn't get going as the safety car kept coming out every time I'd opened up a gap meaning it disappeared.

"We had a few problems in the first race with the front brake disc and suspension so I was relieved to get the win but everything was spot on in the second race," he added.

"The pace was quicker and I felt more comfortable so all in all it's a great start to the season.

"Winning that second race was very important to me as I wanted to become the most successful rider in the championship but there was nothing easy about it.

"Alex Lowes was pushing me all of the way, but even though the race was red-flagged early I have done the double and that makes me a happy man."
