Samsung Honda's Alex Lowes will start from pole position in the first MCE British Superbike race at Oulton Park on Bank Holiday Monday.

Lowes set a blistering lap during Q3, becoming the first rider this weekend to dip into the 1m 34s bracket with a stunning time of 1m 34.884s giving him the upper hand over championship leader Shane 'Shakey' Byrne.

It was a determined qualifying performance by Lowes, who led the way in Q1, Q2 and Q3 to underscore his dominance.

Rapid Solicitors Kawasaki rider Byrne – second in each qualifying session – lapped in 1m 35.344s to secure second place on the front row ahead of Tyco Suzuki's Josh Brookes, who improved his fifth position from FP3 to lap in 1m 35.784s.

Ulsterman Keith Farmer moved up the leaderboard on the second of Paul Bird's Rapid Solicitors Kawasakis to take fourth position in 1m 36.014s, with Buildbase BMW's Jon Kirkham and Chris Walker on the Quattro Plant Kawasaki rounding out the first half dozen.

Tommy Bridewell (Bathams Honda), Peter Hickman (Lloyds British GBmoto Honda) and Karl Harris on the PR Kawasaki were seventh, eighth and ninth respectively.

Milwaukee Yamaha's James Ellison dropped to tenth on the grid after topping the times in FP3 with the former MotoGP rider ruled out of Q3 after developing problems with his YZF-R1 in the pits.

A number of riders crashed in the first qualifying session, including Danny Buchan, Martin Jessopp and Jenny Tinmouth.

Michael Rutter, who will celebrate his 400th race at Oulton, failed to progress to Q2 with Jessopp and Buchan also among those riders who never made it out of Q1.

Samsung Honda's Ryuichi Kiyonari was eliminated after Q2 along with series rookies PJ Jacobsen on the Tyco Suzuki and Milwaukee Yamaha's Josh Waters.

James Westmoreland, Jakub Smrz, Robbin Harms, Tristan Palmer and Howie Mainwaring's hopes were also ended in Q2.

Lowes is really quick. Unlike the site designer who thought people who are waiting to watch Moto GP on iPlayer would like to know the result when they went onto this BSB site. How to encourage people to use a site?
