Shane Byrne rose to the top of the MCE British Superbike Championship timesheets after second practice at Knockhill, the reigning champion taking advantage of a spill for Alex Lowes to end the day on top.

The Rapid Solicitors Kawasaki rider battled it out with his title rival during the early stages of the session, but Lowes's crash at the hairpin in the closing minutes would allow Byrne to go one tenth clear by the time the chequered flag had fallen.

Behind them, Tyco Suzuki's Josh Brookes hauled himself up to third position, albeit half a second slower than his key rivals, while GBmoto Honda's Peter Hickman confirmed his strong form from the morning by setting the fourth quickest lap.

James Westmoreland also held firm in the top five aboard the Buildbase BMW, ahead of Ryuichi Kiyonari, the Japanese rider still well inside the top ten having been second quickest in the morning.

Hickman's returning team-mate Dan Linfoot was seventh fastest, while Jakub Smrz and Howie Mainwaring made excellent gains between the sessions to end the day in eighth and ninth positions. Knockhill rookie PJ Jacobsen rounded out the top ten.
