Tyco Suzuki's Josh Brookes took full advantage of Shane Byrne's spill to take the honours in the opening MCE British Superbike Championship race at Brands Hatch.
It was Brookes' first victory this season and he held on to win from Samsung Honda's Alex Lowes and Ryuichi Kiyonari after Byrne went down at Hawthorn while attempting a pass.
Brookes was unable to repeat the feat in the second race as Byrne bounced back to make amends, finishing ahead of Milwaukee Yamaha's James Ellison and Lowes, with Brookes fourth on this occasion.
“Winning the first race felt really good; that goes without saying, although I do feel I've been riding as hard as the guys who have been winning all season,” said Brookes.
“I try hard in every race, but more than anything I'm really proud of the team. At each round we keep making progress and I've also been trying to improve my riding.
“I was struggling for grip at the end of the race and had some big slides but we held on for the win,” he added.
“In the second race we never changed and thing on the bike, but I just had no grip, so what can I say.”
Brookes will travel to Japan to compete in this weekend's Suzuka 8-Hour race.
