MCE British Superbike contender Josh Brookes was left cursing his luck after the Australian rider blew his chances of victory on a dramatic final lap at Cadwell Park.
Brookes had taken the lead from Samsung Honda's Alex Lowes with a few corners remaining but slid out of contention at Mansfield as Lowes went on to complete a double.
Afterwards, the hard-riding Suzuki rider admitted he had simply fluffed his lines.
“I've run it over in my head a thousand times since it happened and the bottom line is, I got into the lead and just messed up,” he said.
“But in hindsight it was better to have a go at the win. After I made a mistake over the Mountain I hunted [Tommy] Bridewell down and the pass on Alex Lowes on the last lap was pretty easy to be honest, as I got good drive out of Charlie's and was quicker all race into Park, making up loads of ground.
“I just tucked the front a couple of corners after that but I'm not hurt, the bike's not too badly damaged and we only lost three podium credits.”
Brookes finished on the rostrum in the opening race for the Northern Ireland team behind Lowes and Rapid Solicitors Kawasaki rider Shane 'Shakey' Byrne.
