Tyco Suzuki's Josh Brookes shot to the top of the times during the opening free practice session at the penultimate round of the MCE British Superbike Championship at Silverstone.
The Australian rider had the edge in the damp conditions this morning on the GSXR-1000, setting a fastest lap of 2m 25.509s to lead fellow Showdown contender James Ellison on the Milwaukee Yamaha by 0.657s.
Brookes is gunning for a brace of big results this weekend as he attempts to reignite his hopes of challenging for the title.
The Suzuki rider is currently in fourth place in the standings, 24 points behind Shane Byrne.
Dan Linfoot had headed FP1 on the Lloyds British GBmoto Honda with Jakub Smrz also enjoying a spell in the top spot before Brookes threw down the gauntlet with ten minutes remaining.
Ellison, a double winner in the Silverstone 200 races at the British MotoGP, climbed to second place in the closing stages, demoting Josh Waters – having his first outing in the Halsall Racing Kawasaki after being dropped by Milwaukee Yamaha – to third place.
Smrz, PJ Jacobsen on the second Tyco Suzuki and Rapid Solicitors Kawasaki's Shane Byrne were the top six.
Samsung Honda's Alex Lowes, who has won five of the last six races, opted to skip the damp session.
The top ten was completed by Linfoot, Matteo Baiocco on the Rapid Sport Ducati, PR Kawasaki's Karl Harris and Tommy Bridewell on the Milwaukee Yamaha.
Harris slid off unhurt early in the session before re-joining FP1 on his Kawasaki ZX-10R.CLICK HERE
