Injury forces Kiyonari to call time on season

15 October 2013

Ryuichi Kiyonari's 2013 MCE British Superbike Championship campaign has come to an early conclusion after a failure to recover sufficiently from a shoulder injury sustained in private training.

The three-time champion returned to the series this season with Samsung Honda in what was publicised pre-season as a head-to-head with Shane Byrne for a record-breaking fourth BSB title.

However, the Japanese rider's form has fluctuated markedly over the course of the year and while his five podiums were enough to ensure he made it through to the 'Title Showdown', he was never considered likely for a title challenge once there.

With a training injury forcing him to skip the previous round at Silverstone, Kiyonari won't return to action at Brands Hatch either, bringing the curtain down on his season early and confirming him in sixth place overall. As he did at Silverstone, Frenchman Freddy Foray will ride in place of Kiyonari.

A race winner at World Superbike level, despite his disappointing form in 2013, Kiyoanri remains one of BSB's most successful riders with three titles and 43 race wins under his belt across 164 races. However, his last win came at Snetterton in 2011.
