Byrne grabs grabs day one advantage

18 October 2013

MCE British Superbike Championship leader Shane 'Shakey' Byrne powered to the top of the times in FP2 to seize the initiative at Brands Hatch.

The Rapid Solicitors Kawasaki rider, who leads Samsung Honda's Alex Lowes by a single point with the final three races set to decide the outcome this weekend, was the only rider to dip in to the 1m 25s bracket, with a lap of 1m 25.959s giving the three-time BSB champion provisional pole by almost four tenths of a second from his title rival.

Tyco Suzuki's Josh Brookes got the better of his young team-mate, PJ Jacobsen, for third place, 0.689s off Byrne's pace, while the top six was completed by Chris Walker on the Quattro Plant Kawasaki and Buildbase BMW's Jon Kirkham.

Milwaukee Yamaha's James Ellison and Tommy Bridewell were seventh and eighth respectively after sitting out FP1, followed by Jakub Smrz on Clive Padgett's Honda and PR Kawasaki's Karl Harris.

Noriyuki Haga was 14th fastest on the Rapid Solicitors Kawasaki while Freddy Foray, third quickest in the damp this morning, dropped to 18th on the Samsung Honda.

James Westmoreland, who holds fifth in the Showdown standings ahead of the injured Ryuichi Kiyonari, was 11th on the Buildbase BMW.

The first race of the triple-header weekend takes place tomorrow afternoon.
