Samsung Honda's Alex Lowes took over the lead of the MCE British Superbike Championship as he prepares to battle all the way with Shane 'Shakey' Byrne in tomorrow's final two races at Brands Hatch.

Lowes finished second behind Josh Brookes in Saturday's opener to gain an advantage of three points after Byrne crossed the line in a safe third in the tricky conditions.

"I know how hard it is to lead in those conditions. Josh had a good pace and after qualifying I was a bit worried but my bike felt pretty good in the race," said Lowes.

"It was hard to enjoy it as I had a couple of slides and I thought don't crash and give the championship to him but at the end I felt more comfortable and I just dug in.

"We are basically level pegging going into the races tomorrow and it feels good to be going into the final race with this chance at the title and tomorrow I will either be crying or smiling or getting drunk with 'Shakey'!"

Byrne chose to err on the side of caution and settled for third but is now fired up to challenge for a record fourth BSB crown tomorrow.

"I am never happy to finish third obviously but 16 points are better than none. I got a good start and I settled in behind Josh," he said.

"I knew he was going to be fast because of his performance in qualifying and he seemed to love the qualifying. When he said he was enjoying it and sliding it where he wanted to be I thought 'you can't be serious!'

"Alex came passed me and then he upped the pace a bit and then my bike started to spin a lot and I thought if I push harder and go down now then I will lose 16 points," he added.

"We are still well in contention and hopefully it will be dry tomorrow and we can give everyone a proper show."
