Brands Hatch BSB: Brookes at double as errors cost Lowes and Byrne

Josh Brookes completed a double at Brands Hatch in a dramatic second race that saw MCE British Superbike title favourites Alex Lowes and Shane Byrne both fall victim to the wet conditions
Tyco Suzuki's Josh Brookes sealed a double at Brands Hatch as MCE British Superbike title contenders Alex Lowes and Shane 'Shakey' Byrne both slid out of contention.

Brookes picked off long-time leaders Lee Costello and James Ellison on a stunning final lap in the wet but drying conditions to take a remarkable victory.

The Australian rider overtook Halsall Kawasaki's Costello at the final corner to cement his second victory of the weekend at the Kent circuit, moving back into third place in the series standings ahead of Milwaukee Yamaha rider Ellison.

In a breath-taking race, Samsung Honda star Lowes slid off at Druids on the very first lap, handing the title initiative to rival Byrne.

However, Byrne – who was lying in ninth position – incredibly lost the rear of his Kawasaki ZX-10R on the sixth of 20 laps and limped away from the scene to blow the outcome wide open once more.

Lowes retained his three-point lead at the top over Byrne with the final race of the championship still to come this afternoon.

The Honda rider will start from ninth position on the third row of the grid, with Byrne further back on row eight in 22nd place.

Three-time BSB champion Byrne made a rapid start but was quickly overhauled by Ellison, James Westmoreland and Costello, who opted for full wets.

Lowes' race was over almost before it started when he went down at Druids after Brookes had nipped underneath the Samsung Honda man.

Congratulations Josh on a great weekend and a wholehearted season. Sterling effort. It's been a pleasure to watch on SPEED here in Sydney. Now if we can just educate the commentator (Jack Burnicle?) that Josh comes from Bringelly, which is pronounced 'Brin - Jelly' in here in OZ (not 'Brin - Gally') I'd be happy!
